Is Art really important? Why?

We need air to breathe, water and food for the body, clothing and shelter to protect ourselves. Where did Art come from? Why did art become an integral part of our lives. Is it really important?

I grew up seeing Art all around. My grandparents used to make things, be it embroidery on bedsheets, sky-lanterns during Diwali, table lamp using old calenders or intricate rangolis in front of the house. My parents too would encourage us to make handmade greeting cards, they would decorate the house with terracotta artifacts, pretty wall hangings made from old greeting cards, little things here and there in every nook and corner to beautify them, handmade sweaters, handmade wooden stools, shelfs etc. Since art was part of growing up, I never understood a world which doesn’t have Art in it. My natural inclination was towards all those who knew some form of Art either music, dance or visual arts.

Later, I did come across situations where I met people who appreciate art but don’t create anything themselves. And most of them were parents of the students I taught. They shared that their parents never encouraged or appreciated art as it doesn’t bring in money but we wish our kids should not grow up like us as we feel Art brings joy which even after we have earned we don’t experience.

There life presented the answer on its own to my wonderment. That even if you are kept away from Art, one day it will find you as Art brings Joy.

Apart from air, water, food, clothing and shelter what makes life meaningful is Joy and Art is the seed!! Hence Art is important and will always be!
